As Japan and Australia prepare to meet in the final of the AFC Asian Cup 2011 on Saturday,afcasiancup.com looks back at five memorable finals of the past.
The first four editions of the AFC Asian Cup featured a final round-robin group but due to the increase in the number of participants, the 1972 tournament became the first to culminate in a knockout phase and a championship final.
The inaugural final in Bangkok proved to be a dramatic affair as defending champions Iran met two-time winners Korea Republic. Ali Jabbari put the Iranians ahead shortly after half-time but Park Ee-chon levelled the score for the Koreans to send the match into
extra-time.
