Tsonga saved two break points in forcing the second set to a tie-break that he always looked unlikely to win.
Federer went into the breaker on a real high having won 14 straight points on serve and winning three of his service games in the set to love.
He never looked back after opening up a 5-2 lead with a third ace of the match as the errors began to flow from Tsonga's racket at the worst possible time.
Tsonga whipped a forehand long as Federer brought up four match points, and he needed only one of them as his smash at the net was enough to end Tsonga's hopes of a tournament victory to start the new season.
Tsonga made 28 unforced errors in the match, compared to 17 from Federer, who now leads the Frenchman 3-1 in their career head-to-head on the ATP Tour.
